Eyewitnessesreport that Newborough was in intense pain for two weeks, frequentlyasking for medical attention. They maintain that he never receivedthat attention, but was instead knocked to the floor by guards anddragged on his back to the isolation unit where he remained until hesuffered the massive heart attack and stroke that led to his death.Jeff Winder of regional advocacy group The People United was contactedby several detainees for help in getting the truth out. “They wereoutraged when they saw the statement from ICE in the local newspaper,”Winder said. “They are afraid of repercussions by ICE or by the jailguards because they are speaking out, but were so moved by GuidoNewborough’s death that they felt compelled to take the risk andexpose the conditions that exist in Piedmont.”The People United and other groups have been working in opposition toplans by Farmville and the private company Immigration Centers ofAmerica (ICA) to construct a new 1,000 bed, for-profit immigrantdetention center in Farmville. Despite the fact that ICA has noexperience in managing detention centers, Farmville town ManagerGerald Spates has assured The People United that all is well because”They plan to bring in key staff from the Piedmont Regional Jail.”Advocacy groups are not reassured by this assertion. “The medicalneglect in Piedmont Regional Jail is unconscionable,” said SueFrankel-Streit, another organizer with the People United. “This is thesecond time in two years that a detainee has died here amidstallegations of medical neglect,” she continued referring to anotherNew York Times article which reported that in 2006, detainee AbdouliSall died in the jail while huddled against a clothes dryer for warmthafter being denied his prescription medication.News of the planned detention center has fueled the fear growing amongVirginia’s immigrant families in the wake of increased ICE jobsiteraids over the past year. ”Immigrants are here looking for work inorder to feed their children,” Said Margarita Gonzales, a native ofMexico, as she addressed the Farmville Town Council last month. “It’snot necessary to put us in jail. . . We hope that you will leave usto live in peace. We’re only trying to create secure lives forourselves, just as you are.”ICA has promised a windfall to Farmville’s economy, but advocates warnthis may not pan out. “Last month, ICE cancelled its contract with adetention center in Wyatt, RI after a scandal surrounding a deathsimilar to Guido Newborough’s erupted there,” said Winder. “Farmvillecould find itself in the same situation - with a brand-new jail thatsits empty and the reputation of a prison town where suspicious deathshave occurred.”Interviews are available with Piedmont detainees as well as immigrantsand citizens working against the proposed detention center from theirown communities of Tidewater, Richmond, Northern VA, Fredericksburg,Charlottesville, Louisa, Harrisonburg and Lynchburg. For more information visit http://www.thepeopleunited.org.
Dear President Obama: Underneath many of our country’s economic problems is the thirty-year collapse of consumer protection-both of the regulatory kind and of the self-help kind known as proper access to justice. Last month major consumer groups sent you a letter proposing action to rein in exploitation of consumers as debtors, as buyers of oil, gas and electricity, as patients needing health insurance and as eaters wanting safe goods. Under the Bush regime, the words “consumer protection” were rarely uttered and the Bush administration almost never initiated any pro-consumer efforts, even with massive evidence before it, such as predatory lending and credit card abuses. You need to recognize and elevate the GDP significance of fair consumer policies along with their moral and just attributes at a time of worsening recession. I suggest you focus on the state of the poorest consumers in the urban and rural ghettos. As you know from your days with the New York Public Interest Group (NYPIRG) and as a community organizer in Chicago, the consumers in these areas are the most gouged and least protected. That the “poor pay more” has been extensively documented by civic, official and academic studies, and numerous local newspaper and television news reports. Unfortunately, neither Congress nor the Executive branch have paid adequate attention to the tens of millions of people who lose at least 25 percent of their consumer dollars to multiple frauds and shoddy merchandise. You should establish special task forces in the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission on their plight and on the many proven but unused remedies to assure a fair marketplace with effective enforcement and grievance procedures. Working with and galvanizing local and state agencies to enlarge their capacity and staff-with stimulus monies-can produce a triple-header-making the federal effort more effective, providing valuable jobs and freeing up billions of consumer dollars from the financial sink-hole of commercial crimes. It requires the visibility and eloquence of your personal leadership to launch this long-overdue defense of poor people. A second area of action is simply to update major areas of regulatory health and safety that have been frozen for thirty years. These include modernizing standards for auto and tire safety, food safety, aviation and railroad safety and occupational health and trauma protection. New knowledge, new marketing forays, and new technologies have accumulated during this period without application. It is the obsolescence of so many safety standards hailing from the fifties, sixties and seventies that permits the tricky, corporate advertising claims that products “exceed federal safety standards.” Note for example that the SEC has never come close to regulating the recent explosion of myriad collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). The massive speculation in this area is destabilizing the national and world economies. Third, you need to articulate and provide a high profile to what western Europeans have long called “social consumerism.” Citizens are consumers of government services for which they pay as taxpayers. In return they are entitled to prompt, accurate and courteous responses to their inquiries and to their perceived needs as embraced by the authorizing statutes. To begin with, Americans need to be able to get through to their government agencies and departments. Being put on hold interminably with automated messages to nowhere, not receiving replies of any kind to their letters, and generally getting the brush-off even with the deadlines explicated in the Freedom of Information Act have been a bi-partisan failure. However, under the Bush regime, not answering serious letters from dedicated individuals and groups on time-sensitive matters of policy and action-as with the Iraq war and occupation-became standard operating procedure-starting with President Bush himself. This stonewalling has turned people off so much that they do not even bother to “ask their government” for assistance and that includes an astonishingly unresponsive Congress (other than for ministerial requests such as locating lost VA or social security checks.) As you shape the Obama White House, bear in mind that the “change you can believe in” is one of kind, not just degree. Sincerely yours, Ralph Nader
From Liberty Underground: Amnesty International has said it is “undeniable” that Israel used white phosphorus in crowded civilian areas, contrary to international law, charging that this amounted to a war crime. Accusing Israel of using excessive force, Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, has demanded that those responsible for bombing UN buildings in the Palestinian territory be made accountable. Eight Israeli human rights groups have called on the Israeli government to investigate the scale of the casualties, describing the number of dead women and children as “terrifying.” But it is clear the Israeli government is in all-out cover-up mode. Yesterday, Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, said ”The commanders and soldiers sent to Gaza need to know that they are completely safe from different tribunals and Israel will help and protect them.” We hope we’re wrong on this, but expect the Obama regime to veto any effort in the UN Security Council to bring charges against Olmert so that he may be tried in the World Court. So far, President Obama has pretended not to notice the human rights horror.

Dear Green Party friend,The financial crisis has created a political stampede to stimulate the economy, and as usual the Conservative government is using a crisis as a cover. It is planning to dismantle Canada’s environmental protection legislation. Transport Minister John Baird said recently that the plan to speed up infrastructure spending is being held up by 100-year-old rules. This is the same man who gave us a climate change plan designed to accomplish nothing other than media hits.He was referring to the Navigable Waters Protection Act, a law that has enabled the federal government to protect lakes and rivers for a century. It, along with the Environmental Assessment Act and the Environmental Protection Act, gives the federal government both the right and the responsibility to preserve Canada’s natural heritage. Last Thursday, environmental groups released evidence that the government plans to gut the Environmental Assessment Act.These environmental laws were written so that the environmental implications of projects are considered before construction begins. They are of fundamental importance to protecting our wildlife, our air, and our water.Too many times in the past we have ignored the environment in our rush to go faster only to learn, once it was too late, that the environment was at risk. The Green Party advocates stimulating the green economy to create jobs and secure our children’s future, but we cannot let the financial crisis cloud our judgment. We must see it as an opportunity to make the right kinds of decisions, to preserve our environmental protections, and to invest in the green economy. The budget will come on January 27th, and all the attention will be focused on the billions being spent and the huge deficit. We can’t let the Conservative government use the budget and the crisis tocover up the dismantling of Canada’s environmental protection legislation. Please join us in raising the alarm. Voice your concern!

The Virginia SWCS compiles legislative updates on issues in the Virginia General Assembly of relevance to members of the various Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Since there has been talk amongst GPVA members about running for SWCD seats, I thought this might be relevant. It details bill names, numbers, status, sponsors and brief descriptions. The following link is an HTML document created from the original MS Word update mailed out by the VASWCS.

Not to add insult to injury for Land America’s fired workers, but is anyone that surprised that the house of cards has fallen? After all, its CEO was giving money to Congressman Cantor. If you recall, Cantor also received money from Enron, but to be fair, so did many Congressional figures. Just remember, Congress has already given itself its own stimulus.
From Liberty Underground News:A French news report begins this morning “US-led coalition forces Saturday said they killed 15 armed militants in eastern Afghanistan, but local legislators say the casualties were civilians including women and children.” And al Jazeera reports ”At least 19 people have been killed in two missile attacks by suspected US drones flying over northwest Pakistan” yesterday. French news reports “including three children and at least four civilians.” This is a clear violation of international law and officially condemned by the government of Pakistan. “As you know I am not going to comment on those matters,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters despite being repeatedly pressed to discuss the reports. This is our new free and open government, change we can believe in. No change in the bombing practices.
Green Party: Israel-Palestine truce must include end of Israeli occupation and observance of international law or violence is likely to resume | 01.20.09 |

But Israel is unlikely to take these steps without pressure from the US. President Obama, after his inauguration, has the power to persuade Israel to abandon its military goals and guarantee human rights and equality,” said Hajja Romi Elnagar, a member of the Green Party of Louisiana. The Green Party has called for a halt in US military assistance to Israel. The party also urges boycott and divestment until Israel observes international law, ends the illegal 42-year occupation and systematic destruction of Palestinian civil society, and abolishes its apartheid-like system within Israel as well as in the occupied territories (http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2005_11_28.shtml).Greens noted that Israel has barred Palestinian-Israeli candidates from upcoming elections because their parties opposed the Gaza operation and advocate changing Israel from a Jewish state to a state for all its citizens. Over 20% of Israel’s population are non-Jews.”The main burden of any ceasefire must fall on Israel, a nuclear power with one of the most powerful armies in the world that has enjoyed billions in aid from the US. Over 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza invasion from bombings in heavily populated areas that have hit civilian buildings. Under two dozen Israelis have been killed, most of whom are soldiers. Israel has subjected Palestinian areas to concentration-camp conditions and daily brutality, bulldozed homes and farms, and evicted Palestinians to make way for Israeli Jewish settlers,” said Rosa Clemente, the Green Party’s 2008 candidate for Vice President of the United States (http://www.rosaclemente.com).Greens pointed to reports that the Israeli Defense Force is using illegal white phosphorus bombs in Gaza.and is testing experimental US weapons systems in the assault (”Is Israel Using Illegal Weapons in Its Offensive on Gaza? by Amira Hass, Ha’aretz, January 16, http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1055927.html). The IDF has dropped bombs on civilian targets (including a UN school, shelters, and supply storage centers) despite the fact that it was given coordinates to their locations to prevent such strikes (http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1056258.html).Israel has also blocked journalists, human rights organizations, food deliveries, medical personnel, and medical supplies from entering Gaza, cut off water and electricity, and bombed a sewage plant. 2008 Green presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney participated in an effort to deliver medical supplies until the delivery boat she was traveling on was surrounded by Israeli gunboats and rammed by one of them (http://www.gp.org/cynthia/index.shtml).The Green Party of the United States supports an immediate UN-sponsored, multinational peacekeeping force to protect civilians and to oversee implementation of all UN resolutions and the dismantling of the occupation (http://www.gp.org/platform/2004/democracy.html#307394).”The worst that Barack Obama can do is to maintain the Middle East policies of previous Democratic and Republican administrations. If Mr. Obama embraces the rule of international law and redirects funding from aid to Israel to support for a peacekeeping force, ensuring the provision of medical and other supplies to the occupied Palestinian territories, and rebuilding Palestinian infrastructure, he’ll go down in history as a peacemaker,” said Jill Bussiere, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States.MORE INFORMATIONGreen Party of the United States http://www.gp.org202-319-7191, 866-41GREENFax 202-319-7193Tally of Green election victories http://www.gp.org/2008-elections/election-results.htmlGreen candidate news http://www.gp.org/2008-elections/candidate-news.phpGreen candidate database for 2008 and other campaign information: http://www.gp.org/elections.shtmlGreen Party News Center http://www.gp.org/newscenter.shtmlGreen Party Speakers Bureau http://www.gp.org/speakersGreen Party ballot access page http://www.gp.org/2008-elections~ END ~
