Fight back against corporate front groups

07.26.10

Corporate front groups are growing in size and influence, but their secret funders want to remain in the shadows.

If they’re trying to influence your vote with election-season political ads, then you should know who they are.

Passage of the DISCLOSE Act (S.3295) would reveal the funders and restrict political ads by government contractors and foreign entities.

Canada: Poll Predicts FOUR Green MPs

06.12.10

A recent EKOS poll projects that the Green Party will win four seats—one in Ontario and three in BC. The poll also has us at record-high popular support with 12.6%. In BC, we were at a whopping 20.2%, ahead of the Liberals and hot on the heels of the NDP and the Conservatives. And the media have taken notice:Can you feel the Maymentum? asks Kady O’Malley of the CBC.Lawrence Martin of the Globe & Mail writes:“Elizabeth May’s Greens, perhaps benefiting from the calamity in the Gulf, are polling better than ever. They’re in the low teens and doing far better than that in British Columbia, where she has a good shot at winning a seat.”But we all know that the only poll that matters is the one that happens on election day. And if we’re going to translate great polling results into actual seats, we need your help.To elect Green MPs, we need to seek out and support amazing candidates. We need to build local organizations at the grassroots level. And we need to prepare and promote an inspirational national campaign.Your gift, large or small, will enable us to accomplish all this and more this summer. When an election is called—be it in the fall or in the spring - we’ll be ready.Thank you so much for your contribution. Together, we will change the climate in Parliament.

From Liberty Underground: NO MORE KNEELING BEFORE DEMOCRATS?

05.13.10

 From Liberty Underground News:

“The new president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) said Tuesday that her group will not support Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) even if she wins her contested primary race next week,” begins a piece at The Hill this morning.

“Mary Kay Henry, elected on Saturday by the union’s international executive board, said her union members will back candidates not based on their party label but on their positions on ‘working people’s issues.’”

Many in the labor movement have questioned why it is that so many labor unions support Democrats, even if they have a record of voting to attack and undermine organized labor, when there are better options, like Green Party candidates, who never waiver in their support for labor.

Green Candidate, Midge Potts, Says She Will Walk for US Senate

While the recognized parties will hold primaries, the Progressive Party of Missouri will circulate petitions to gather 10,000 verified signatures in order to gain ballot access. Midge Potts, the Co-Chair of the Progressive Party of Missouri, as well as a delegate to the Green Party of the United States National Committee, announced in June 2009 that she would seek the US Senate seat being vacated by Kit Bond. Tuesday she released a statement proclaiming that she intends to run a non-traditional campaign by walking the state in order to discuss issues of concern to Missourians in their own communities.”In 1976, Joe Teasdale, a then unknown entity in the Missouri political arena, walked the state on his way to winning the governor’s race against Republican incumbent, Kit Bond,” Said Ms. Potts, “I intend on replicating the feat of ‘Walking Joe’ by winning the hearts and minds of Missouri voters in a series of walks and bike rides that will highlight a number of issues leading up to the November 2nd general election.” Potts added, “The only way an alternative party candidate can compete against the special interest money spent by career politicians such as Roy Blunt and Robin Carnahan, is to bypass traditional campaign outreach through directly engaging people with innovative ideas and raw creativity.”In her statement, Potts described plans for her first walk which will begin on April 10th at the Ameren Nuclear Power plant near Fulton, and will end on May 1st, the anniversary of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with a rally at the Honeywell nuke bomb parts factory in Kansas City.”I want to highlight the need for the Nuclear Disarmament and Economic Conversion Act which has been introduced into Congress by Washington DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton,” remarked Potts. “Now is the time to divert the more than fifty billion dollars American taxpayers spend each year on maintaining the US nuclear arsenal into retooling facilities, such as the KC Honeywell plant, to build green technologies.” She announced that she will hold a press conference in Columbia on April 10th before traveling 30 miles to Calloway county where she will begin her walk.Midge Potts, co-chair of the Progressive Party of Missouri, is the party’s candidate for U.S. Senator in 2010. She and other party members are circulating petitions to get Ms. Potts and other Progressive Party candidates on the Missouri ballot this year.

Documents, links, and other materials related to the action are available online (http://www.electors.us). Mr. Gordon’s prepared oral argument, with an excellent brief summary of the civil action’s defense of the constitutional right to cast an equal and effective vote, is now posted online (http://mapxiv2usc6.free0host.com/ORAL-RAP.pdf).According to a court order issued on January 11, “The court concludes, on its own motion, that oral argument will not assist the court in this case. Accordingly, the court will dispose of the appeal without oral argument on the basis of the record and the presentations in the briefs. See Fed. R. App. 34(a)(2); D.C. Cir. Rule 34(j).”Gordon v. Biden seeks enforcement of the US Constitution’s ‘Mal-Apportionment Penalty’ (14th Amendment, Section 2), which mandates a reduction of a state’s presidential electors and congressional representatives (”the basis of representation therein shall be reduced”) if “the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States… is denied… or in any way abridged.”The civil action, Gordon v. Biden (formerly Gordon v. Cheney), addresses the antidemocratic mal-apportionment of Electoral College votes, voter dilution by race and/or party affiliation with the popular vote misrepresented by the winner-take-all system of allocating electoral votes.Mr. Gordon (http://www.gp.org/speakers/detail.php?ID=29), chair of the DC Statehood Green Party’s Electoral College Task Force and executive director of the Douglass Institute of Government, filed his civil action to protect the voting rights of presidential electors and the voters they represent in the US District Court (1:08-cv-01294) on July 28, 2008. His reply brief (http://mapxiv2usc6.free0host.com/APPELLANT%27S%20REPLY%20BRIEF_map.pdf) was filed with the court on November 6 and final brief submitted on November 27 (http://mapxiv2usc6.free0host.com/APPELLANT%27S%20FINAL%20BRIEF.pdf).The Green Party has supported Mr. Gordon’s civil action, calling it a demand for fair elections, for the right of every voter to have his or her vote counted in a national election, and for racial justice. Greens Make a Difference in November 3 Elections

11.08.09

The Green Party made some big new moves and proved that it has earned the voter’s support in Tuesday’s local elections.Greens in California made history again by winning, for the fourth time in American history, a majority on a town council.  Pam Hartwell-Herrero finished first of seven candidates to join Lew Treamine and Larry Bragman on the majority-Green Fairfax Town Council.  Greens also earned majorities on the Arcata, CA council in the late 90s and in Sebastopol, CA and the village of New Paltz, NY earlier in this decade. In Minnesota, incumbent Minneapolis City Council Cam Gordon was re-elected, as well as long-time Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board member Annie Young.Greens on the East Coast showed their skills with perfect election nights. Two candidates ran for city councils in Maryland and both were victorious.  Dan Robinson maintained his seat on the Takoma Park, MD council and Christine Nagle won her election to the College Park, MD council.  In New Caanan, CT, three Greens ran for Constable and all were elected.Elsewhere in new England, Kevin Donoghue and David Marshall won re-election to the Portland (ME) City Council.  Chuck Turner was re-elected to the Boston City Council. In New York, in a partisan race, Mary Jo Long was re-elected to the Afton Town Council and Jennifer Dotson was re-elected to the Ithaca Common Council.  Lynne Serpe put the Green Party on the map in New York City, winning nearly 25% in her race for New York City Council. To see more 2009 election results, visit http://www.gp.org/elections/2009-videos/november-results.html.  To get a sneak preview of the 2010 Green Party candidates from your area, visit the Green Party’s comprehensive election database at http://www.gp.org/elections.shtml.

Elect Josh Ruebner, Virginia!

11.01.09

Dear friends,Thank you for your continued support of my campaign to become the first-ever Green Party candidate elected to Virginia’s House of Delegates.  You can follow all the latest updates about my campaign on my website by clicking here.Last week, I filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Alexandria along with other Arlington Green Party members to stop the so-called “spot improvements” to I-66.  As I mentioned in the press release, the I-66 spot improvement plan is “a waste of tax-payer dollars as it will only create new traffic bottlenecks.  This plan is road widening by stealth, in violation of the Coleman decision limiting I-66 to two lanes in each direction.  It is an example of extremely poor transportation policy planning by VDOT.  I joined this suit to try to stop the so-called ’spot improvements’ since the Arlington County Board has proven itself feckless on this issue.”Read the entire press release by clicking here. This Saturday, the Arlington Green Party will be rallying prior to the Arlington County board in support of our lawsuit to stop VDOT’s “spot improvements”  to I-66 and you are invited to join us!  Meet us outside the county government building at the flagpole at 8AM, Saturday, September 26, 2100 Clarendon Blvd.  Afterwards, we’ll go inside to the county board meeting to explain to the Arlington County Board our decision to sue VDOT.Also, we’ll be campaigning between 11AM-7PM on Saturday at Clarendon Day.  Are you interested in helping to staff our Green Party table and help us get the word out about my campaign and that of John Reeder for Arlington County Board?  If so, please contact Kirit at kamno5@hotmail.com to volunteer.I’ve been having a great time on the campaign trail meeting voters and speaking with them about their concerns.  I’ve passed out thousands of postcards to voters while walking the precincts.  But I still have a lot of anticipated expenses for my campaign.  Please help me print more literature, print lawn signs, and place ads in the local papers by making a generous contribution to my campaign by clicking here.My Democractic and Republican opponents are taking tens of thousands of dollars from the health care industry, banking associations, and various other corporate lobbyists.  Like all Green Party candidates, I take no corporate money because I am accountable to and hope to represent the people of my district, not lobbyists.  This puts me at a huge disadvantage, so please consider making a generous contribution to my campaign today by clicking here. You can also make a contribution via check and send it to:Ruebner for Delegate1617 10th St. SouthArlington, VA 22204Please include your profession, employer, and place of employment with your contact information with any contribution.  I need this information for campaign finance reporting purposes. Finally, I’ve been having some technical difficulties with my campaign email account which should be fixed now.  But Iif you sent an email tojosh@ruebnerfordelegate.org and I didn’t reply, please resend it.

Thank you so much for all your support for my campaign.

Underdog Green party raise big cash in push for upset of City Council

10.30.09

In Queens, NY (click here for aticle):

Aspiring to topple Queens’ most enduring political dynasty, an upstart City Council candidate in Astoria will have more than double the campaign cash of Democratic incumbent Peter Vallone Jr. in the race’s final stretch.

The camp of Green Party contender Lynne Serpe plans to use her $100,000 war chest - about $80,000 from public matching funds - to inundate voters with mailings and TV commercials ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Vallone, meanwhile, said on Tuesday that he has just $40,000 left after forgoing matching funds - arguing their use by an incumbent wastes taxpayer dollars.

“I just think it’s the right thing to do,” he said.

Morals aside, Serpe’s monetary edge may help level the playing field in her bid to unseat a heavily favored opponent with valuable name recognition.

Serpe said she hoped her campaign funds and record as an environmental activist would “combine to allay any concerns in voters’ minds about my credibility.”

“Ultimately it should come down to whether I’m the best person to represent them, and that was my goal all along,” she said.

Serpe, 38, has focused her campaign on issues like energy efficiency, clean air and everyday library service. But she also attacks Vallone for voting to extend term limits and implies his family’s time in charge has run its course.

“Not much has changed except for senior to junior in the political power structure,” said Serpe, referring to Vallone’s father, Peter Sr., who held the same Council seat from 1974 to 2001.

Local Green Party bosses admitted Serpe stands a better chance than many of the organization’s other candidates.

Serpe “has already done some incredible work to show voters she can be taken seriously,” said Gloria Mattera, the party’s state chairwoman from 2004 to 2008.

Ann Eagan, the Green Party’s chairwoman in western Queens, figured Serpe’s enthusiasm will also win over voters.

“Anyone who is alive from the neck up, and that’s not a hell of a lot of people, would be moved by the things that she says,” Eagan gushed.

But among those predicting an easy victory for Vallone is Queens Gazette Publisher Tony Barsamian, who moderated a debate between Serpe, Vallone and Populist Party candidate Gerald Kann on Monday.

“I don’t think it will be close,” Barsamian said.
