[fgp-chat] Fredericksburg Green Party "Re-organization" meeting Sun. March 23

Greetings Fellow Greens!

You are receiving this announcement because you have, at some time in the
past, expressed interest in the Green Party, and are (we believe) in some
proximity to the Fredericksburg area. If this assumption is incorrect,
we're very sorry and will remove you from our local list - just send me a
personal email (address below).

I know the Fredericksburg local branch of the Virginia Green Party has been
somewhat dormant over the past couple of years, but I'd really like to make
one last attempt to kick-start it again, before we decide to close up shop.
If you have any interest in the following topics, we'd truly appreciate your
attendance at our "re-organization" meeting, scheduled for Sunday, March
23rd, 2pm, at the downtown Fredericksburg library.

The topics:

*	Campaign Reform and Ballot Access
*	Anti-Discrimination Issues
*	Voting Rights and Civic Engagement
*	Corporate "Personhood" and Tax Policy
*	Unemployment and Veterans' Benefits
*	Privatization and Deregulation Issues
*	Environmental Issues
*	School Nutrition and Commercialization Issues
*	Education Policy and Teacher Compensation
*	Consumer Rights and Predatory Lending Practices
*	Telecommunications Policy
*	Small Business Taxes and Incentives

There are local aspects to all of these issues, so I encourage you to help
identify these by bringing a list of specific, relevant local problems,
policy changes, referendum suggestions, debate or protest opportunities, or
other actions you believe would improve the quality and fairness of life for
all in our area. Our immediate goal at the local level is not to tackle
big-picture, national actions, but rather to identify a couple of important
but achievable local projects that will build our identity and momentum over
time.

We know there are a number of other great local organizations working on
these issues (Virginia Organizing Project, Sierra Club, etc.), but our
strategy is a little different than theirs. Rather than relying on public
outcry alone, or depending on major-party career politicians to listen to
our arguments with one ear, while their other is on the phone with corporate
campaign contributors, we provide a mechanism by which honest local citizens
can take direct control of an issue by running for office. Unlike most
political parties, our bylaws specifically forbid the acceptance of
corporate campaign contributions. But this means that once we find good
issues, and candidates who are willing to take on those moneyed interests
who continue to thwart progress on these issues, the rest of us need to kick
into high gear and support these candidates and causes, with our time, our
donations, and our voices!

So please join us for this important meeting, and bring your like-minded
friends!

Please forward this announcement to those whom you believe would be
interested, but take note: This is more of an internal meeting than a
general interest meeting, and public advertising has been kept to a minimum.
I've limited distribution of this announcement to existing FGP or GPVA
members because I want to make sure we have a functioning organizational
structure in place first, so that once we do open up the doors to the
general public, the committees and tasks will already have been defined, so
they can get started working right away! Alternatively, if nobody shows up
at this meeting, we'll know that Fredericksburg is DOA politically, and we
can save our advertising dollars by sending them back to the state party.
